Finally found the time to update the blog. We just came back to Singapore after a two-week trip (Sept 15-29) to Manila for Kate's baptismal. Been busy most days meeting people, relatives, friends etc.. and been going from one place to another. Hence two weeks felt shorter than it is. Anyway, here are pics from Manila and during the baptismal.. Enjoy!

After a feed
After a feed of rice cereal and drinking water. Kate had some insect bites on the side of her face, as you can notice from the pics. Couple of bites on her arm as well. I'm still wondering if it's a landborne insect or a mosquito though we can't seem to detect any mosquito in our room, so the culprit is still at large. I woke up the other day with bites on my feet as well.

Back home from weekend KKH
Its been a while since my last update so i'll have to track back to Aug 13 when we just came back from KKH hospital after Kate got admitted the Saturday before.
AUG 10, Friday: We intended to go to the hospital to have Kate checked up for a different reason. She has a slight assymetry in her head shape which we were concerned about. It's one of those "flat head" condition which happens when the baby spends too much time lying in a single position and the pressure "flattens" a side of the baby's unfused skull. But before we can even book a schedule, we realised that she was having a fever. at 38.8C.
AUG 11, Saturday: The fever still remained and we got quite concerned, hence a trip to KKH got underway. Doctor checked her, ordered a urine test since he's suspecting a possible UTI. Tests came back with a non-conclusive result, yet he advised us to have Kate admitted. I voiced out my concern on the fact that he was recommending hospitalisation despite a non-conclusive report from a contaminated urine sample. He said he wouldn't take the risk of letting the baby off, with the findings he got from the test. So there begins our sleepless and uncomfortable, hospital weekend stay.
AUG 13, Monday: A second urine test and a blood test confirmed that she's negative for UTI. Fever came off but rashes appeared on Kate's torso. Attending doctor, a different one this time, said it may just be false measles from a viral infection. He said as long as the fever came down, this shouldn't be a concern.
AUG 14, Tuesday: Kate got her fever-free status for 24-hours. She got discharged the same day, after i expressed that we're keen to go home since all of us we're not getting enough sleep in the hospital.
We went back home and I finally had the time to do some research on the viral infection Kate may have gotten. I found one called Roseola. Apparently it's a common sickness that babies more than six months old get. And you know what? it doesn't require hospitalisation. I'm no doctor but i can say that the symptoms and duration were spot-on. Three days of fever and appearance of rash right after. Kate went back to her normal self by Friday, and we get our collective sigh of relief. We're all back to smiles..

Kate at Miel's
(Semi) Solid food!
At 5 months 3 weeks, Kate already weighs more than 9kg. I'm not sure if she's heavier than the norm but she does look bigger than most kids her age that i've seen, which i'm not really surprised with since my wife is a tall woman at 5ft 10 inches (by asian standards). We started introducing rice cereals in her meal when she was 4 months old and she seem to have instinctively gave a liking for solid food. Feeding her cereals has been a delight so far since she has never refused any of the food we have given her. The only drawback though is she likes her food so much that we have to give it without delay, otherwise she'll show a tantrum. The water bottle is at hand to pacify her in the gaps between refilling her food bowl. Mark on her face was a result of a pacifier she was using before her feed. Feeding started few minutes after her lunchtime nap.

Grandma and Kate
Last Sunday, Kat's mom, Nanay Mely, went back to Manila after a six-month stay with us.
During these months Nanay kept a watchful eye on our little Kate. From the time she was born, and the months to follow as my wife went back to work after her maternity leave. She also looked after how our new nanny was like in taking care of Kate, eventually giving her nod of approval.
She passed on here experience and maternal instincts to us on what to do with our little one. And for that we'll be eternally grateful. For myself, i'm grateful to her twice. For being the mother of my wife and the loving grandmother of my daughter. We send our love Nanay.

Pick of the week
It's almost a ritual now that we take pictures of Kate every weekend, the only time we get to spend two full days with our little one. On weekdays, depending on our schedule, I or Kat often gets home when Kate's already asleep or is about to sleep. We sleep with her in the same room, but that's not exactly a time "spent" together. Or is it? We still feed her at least once during the night, so that counts as quality time eventhough we're the ones half-awake. Nevertheless, Kate's smile, as my mum in law always says, makes everything worthwhile. And she's absolutely right.

That small oblong-shaped area at the centre of the picture is the very first image of Baby Kate. She was 5 weeks old if i remember correctly, though the scan states she's at 6 weeks. Yep, the machine can also miscalculate. She was only 1.61cm in size. Not bigger than a peanut. But look at her now.

Day out at Botanic gardens
The whole "gang", baby Kate, my wife, my mom-in-law and our new nanny went out to Botanic Gardens today. Thought it would be a relaxing stroll around the park since there wasn't much sun, but fifteen minutes later after the entrance and everyone's already looking for the air-conditioned areas. It was humid and all of us we're sweating like pigs. Baby Kate also wasn't up for the weather so we didn't stay long. We did manage to get to the orchid garden which my mom-in-law thoroughly enjoyed. I guess Kate also enjoyed looking at the colours around her in the garden. Our trip made me realise that a clip-on portable fan is a must-have accessory for the baby pram.

First sunbathe, 3-day old Kate
Here's Kate getting some sunshine. We learned that Kate had a slight jaundice and elevated bilirubin levels when she was discharged. Sunlight exposure is supposed to break down the bilirubins on her bloodstream which are still not processed properly by her young liver.
We did this as the doctor advised for the next two days. However, our follow-up checkup with the paediatrician the next day revealed her bilirubin had not got down to an acceptable range. The doc advised us to have a photo UV treatment for Kate.
We initially intended to go to Thomson Medical Centre for that but we thought their rates for a simple UV treatment and ward is rather unreasonable. We went to KK hospital instead. To our relief, Kate only had to stay at KK overnight since her B levels went down the next day.
The UV photo treatment involves exposing a baby under a UV lamp for 24 hours or more, with their eyes covered, much like what you do when you're sunbathing. The only difference is the light from these lamps is not hot like sunlight. So no sunburns.
Sometimes the baby would require 2 set of lamps, top and bottom while they lie on a transparent container, depending on how elevated their B levels are.
Here's a snap of mommy and Kate before she was checked in. Kat was still having a hard time getting up from a chair. It's only her fourth day after delivery.

And there she is.

Here are the very first pictures of Kate outside the womb. She was delivered by Dr Eunice Chua from TMC in Thomson with the help of two other nurses (which i didn't get the names). Kate was born under assisted delivery, which means a suction device was used to gently pull her out while the mother is pushing during contractions. Doc Chua recommended the device after a couple of attempts to push out the baby were unsuccessful. Kinda nifty device i must say.
And then Kate was out. Doc and nurses then agreed on why Kat was having difficulty in pushing. She was big. 3.9kg to be exact. I thought it was the gas that made Kat high.

Contractions
1. Tiny contractions. That's Spongebob Square Pants on the telly. Recommended for parents-to-be in the delivery room.
2. Not so tiny contractions. This is when she started using the gas mask connected to the wall. Can't remember what gas that was but she became high after a few whiffs.
After i've taken this photo, one of the Thomson nurses told me that i should be refraining from taking photos or videos once Kat starts pushing out the baby. I was actually intending to video the event, however, the nurse said my assistance might be needed hence i should keep my hands and mind free from other things. She said I can resume taking pictures after the baby is given the all clear and gets transferred to the thermal mat. So even if i wanted to, there will be no pictures of the actual delivery.

Inton inside
Since i started my first post with a current picture of Kate (and myself), i guess most of you will be asking where are the pictures three months back? Well, starting from here, i'll be posting some of the pictures me and my wife have taken since January 27. Here's Kat, 5 hours before D-day (or hour). She can still smile at this point since the contractions haven't gone into full swing.
Welcome Kate!
Hi all, it's been almost 3 months since our journey to a new life of parenthood started. I know i should've started making this chronicle much earlier but as you know, having a baby can be busy. Not to mention that neither me or my wife Kat grew up with the habit of making journals or writing blogs. We're visual artists for a reason, and that's to avoid math and writing. :) In any case, i guess it makes perfect sense not just to show you pictures of our baby, but tell you as well the story and experience behind each image. I'm not usually very good at keeping journals, but hey, there's always the first time. Like parenthood. :) We've got three months backlog of pictures to share, hence i'm not exactly sure where to begin. I haven't decided yet.
Nonetheless, here's our first post on this blog, meet our precious, Kate Justine Inton.
